During the holiday season I love the opportunity to give handmade, unique gifts to my family and friends. It brings enjoyment watching them open a gift you created with your own hands and knowing they’ll enjoy it within the walls of their own home. Creating a personalized gift doesn’t have to cost you much money and/or time. It’s a great chance to recycle items that you otherwise throw away, like your wine corks.
If you’re like me, you may have collected wine corks over the years and displayed them in decorative vases around the house, but now you’ll learn how to turn those old corks into one-of-a-kind drink coasters.
DIY Cork Coasters
- 32 Corks
- Roll of Cork Board
- Hot Glue Gun
Step 1 — Each coaster requires 8 corks. In order to make a set of 4 coasters, you’ll need 32 of your favorite wine corks.
Idea: mix and match your corks for a unique pattern or even write a date and place on some of the corks that signify special occasions.
Step 2 — Setup up your corks in a pattern of 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 as seen here. Using hot glue, place a strip of glue between two corks and press together for 30 seconds. Do this for all segments.
Step 3 — While the corks that have been glued together dry, unroll your cork board and measure and cut squares that’ll be used as the base of your coaster.
Step 4 — Apply hot glue to the cork board and let stand 15-20 seconds to get tacky. Then start to adhere your sets of corks (2 at a time) in your designated pattern.
Step 5 — Fill in gaps between corks with additional hot glue and apply constant pressure for approximately 30 seconds.
Tip: Place a heavy object on top of the coaster while it’s drying to ensure proper contact with all areas of the corkboard.
Step 6 — Once dry, wrap twine around the outside of the coaster and tie a knot to secure.
If you are giving a set of coasters as a gift this holiday season, tie a ribbon around the coasters as the perfect finishing touch.
Enjoy your favorite Cambria wines this holiday season and start saving your corks for a future DIY gift-giving project. Happy Holidays!
