Long before The Santa Maria Valley benchland was
recognized for winegrowing, the native Chumash Indians knew it
as "tepuztli," meaning copper coin. Later, Spanish settlers
translated the word as Tepusquet. Part of an 1838 Mexican land
grant, "Rancho Tepusquet" was home to cattle and row crops
throughout the 1800s.
Cambria is part of the original Tepusquet Vineyard planted between 1970
and 1971 on the Santa Maria Bench. It quickly earned a reputation for
site-specific, character-laden Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Early clients
for grapes included some of California's finest wineries.
Construction of the winery was completed in 1990 and an
additional barrel aging facility was added in 1995.
Today, the 1405-acre estate vineyard is currently planted to
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and small amounts of experimental
varietals. Production includes the signature Katherine's
Chardonnay, Julia's Pinot Noir and Tepusquet Vineyard Syrah,
Bench Break Vineyard, Rae's and Experimental wines.
Stylistically, all of the wines are noteworthy for their
consistent expression of quality that typifies winegrowing along
the Santa Maria Bench.
